Our school received funding from Ballina 2023 which was used to create a wonderful community mural to the rear of our school building. Emma Donoghue, Manager Craoibhín Ballina and local artist co-ordinated the project. There were a number of volunteers from many local groups who made fantastic contributions to the mural.
The theme of the July Summer Programme 2023 was Building Confidence and Connections. Pupil participation in the completion of this community mural on school grounds was a new experience for our pupils. There were opportunities to grow in confidence by meeting new people and engaging with the process. Our pupils worked with new materials and experienced a sense of excitement as the mural was officially unveiled on 12th Sept 2023. This socially collaborative project was inclusive and created a great sense of achievement for all involved. All those involved in the project worked collaboratively to transform a space into a stimulating and visually appealing area, enhancing pupils’ enjoyment of the outdoors.

The mural depicts the story of the natural landscape and native animals to the area of Ballina. The mural consists of abstract landscape with defined shapes and bright colours which enable those with visual impairments to appreciate the scene. In recognition of pupils who have passed away a selection of dragonflies feature within the mural.

Providing opportunities for the pupils of St Nicholas to be involved in projects such as these, ensures our pupils rightfully occupy a place at the forefront of our community.

We extend our appreciation to Ballina 2023 and to Emma Donoghue and look forward to further colourful collaborations in the future!
