St. Nicholas School Ballina

Ox Mountain Classroom

Welcome to Ox Mountain classroom!

Welcome to Class 2. We are the upper primary class. We are an energetic and active room. Our daily routine is predictable so we can focus on the fun aspects of school.
The best way to learn is by playing and having fun. Our lessons are vibrant and taught through a multi-sensory approach. There are real life objects and equipment so we can use a hands-on approach to learning. It’s so much fun when we are engaged by motivating activities and objects which interest us. There are opportunities for individual work to meet our specific goals and we enjoy working as a group for topic lessons. During our learning there is always a focus on communication and independence which is adapted for each of our abilities. We hope you have fun sharing our success.

Easter

We finished last term with an Easter party. Some friends and staff joined us from other classes. We had great fun tasting different sweets and trying on the bunny glasses.

This term we will be learning about all the fun things we can do over the summer. We’ve made some summer images using colourful sand. Most of us enjoyed looking at the different colours and exploring a new texture in art. Some of our friends were very happy to sweep the sand onto the floor instead.
We’ve also been matching and labelling our summer images. Hopefully we will get some more sunny days to enjoy the local playgrounds and outings in town.

In Class 2 we really enjoy cooking. This term we have been using the toaster to toast bagels. The first time we saw them we thought they looked like doughnuts.

This lesson helps us to make choices. We’ve made choices between white and brown bagels. The white ones were the most popular. We’ve tried out lots of different toppings and spreads. The most popular was strawberry jam chosen by two of us every week. One of us didn’t like any of the spreads and asked for butter. One of us tried all the toppings, even cream cheese. And one of us liked the chocolate spread and peanut butter on a spoon. No one wanted to try the biscuit spread.

During this lesson we practice our knife skills and learn that the toast gets hot. We’re looking forward to trying new ingredients and learning more skills next term.
